Deutsche Telekom Sells Sustainable 5G Smartphone

Deutsche Telekom has begun offering the Fairphone 4, a device the manufacturer highlights as the world's most sustainable 5G smartphone. The company aims to promote a more responsible electronics industry by providing a product designed for longevity and ease of repair.

Smartphones contribute significantly to resource consumption and environmental impact due to their production and often short lifespans. The Fairphone 4 addresses these issues by using materials sourced from fair trade practices and avoiding rare earth minerals from questionable origins. The phone's modular design allows users to easily replace components like the battery or screen.

The Fairphone 4 has received the "Blauer Engel" environmental label, signifying its durability, low radiation, and use of sustainable materials. The manufacturer provides a five-year warranty, an unusual offering in the industry. Additionally, the device is guaranteed at least six years of software support with regular updates, further extending its usable life.

The device's repairability is a key feature. Replacing parts such as the display or cameras is intended to be straightforward, with spare parts available directly from the manufacturer's online shop. For example, a new screen costs under 80 euros, and a battery or front camera under 30 euros. This approach aims to reduce electronic waste and conserve natural resources.
