Deutsche Telekom has begun extensive 5G testing in downtown Berlin, preparing for the wider introduction of the technology in Germany. The company has installed the first commercial 5G antennas in a test network covering parts of the Mitte and Schöneberg districts.

The test network utilizes the new 5G New Radio (5G NR) technology and has enabled Europe's first real 5G data connection operating in a live network. Deutsche Telekom aims to gather data and insights on network performance and new service potential before a commercial launch.

Claudia Nemat, Board Member for Technology and Innovation, emphasized that the company is continuing its preparations for the 2020 5G rollout. "We have successfully integrated commercial 5G technology into our network to ensure that 5G delivers on its promise of enhanced mobility, high speed, and low latency," Nemat stated.

The Berlin test area will expand throughout the summer, with over 70 antennas to be installed at more than 20 locations. This network is intended to serve as the foundation for Deutsche Telekom's future commercial 5G network in Germany. The company is also exploring new application development opportunities in collaboration with its startup incubator.
