Deutsche Telekom to Expand European Mobile Coverage with Starlink Satellites

Deutsche Telekom is set to enhance its mobile network coverage across Europe through a strategic partnership with Starlink. The collaboration aims to provide mobile connectivity in regions where traditional mobile tower expansion is difficult due to factors like topography or conservation requirements.

The new satellite-based direct-to-device service will complement existing infrastructure, enabling compatible smartphones to connect to Starlink's satellite network when terrestrial signals are unavailable. This service is planned to launch in early 2028 across several European Telekom markets, including Germany, offering data, voice, and messaging capabilities.

Company officials state the integration of satellite connectivity will increase network resilience and provide an additional layer of safety for customers, particularly during emergencies such as natural disasters or prolonged power outages. This initiative aligns with Telekom's strategy to establish an "Everywhere Network" that ensures consistent connectivity.

The announcement was made at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Stephanie Bednarek, VP of Starlink Sales, highlighted the agreement as a first-of-its-kind in Europe, bringing broadband services directly to mobile phones via next-generation satellite technology.
