Deutsche Telekom to expand mobile coverage with Starlink satellite service

Deutsche Telekom is expanding its mobile network coverage through a partnership with Starlink. The new satellite-based direct-to-device service aims to address connectivity challenges in areas where traditional mobile tower expansion is complicated by factors such as topography or environmental regulations.

The service is scheduled to launch in Europe in 2028, utilizing Starlink's next-generation satellites. It will enable future compatible smartphones to connect directly to satellites. When a device loses its terrestrial mobile signal, it will automatically switch to the Starlink network, providing access to data, video, voice, and text messaging services.

According to the company, the satellite connectivity strengthens its "network everywhere" approach and enhances network resilience. This is particularly important in emergency situations, such as during natural disasters or prolonged power outages, when traditional infrastructure might fail.

Deutsche Telekom emphasizes that the satellite service will complement its existing terrestrial network. In Germany, the company already boasts near 90% geographic coverage with its 5G network and over 92% with LTE. The new connectivity strategy aims to deliver comprehensive and reliable network access in all circumstances.
