Deutsche Umwelthilfe Criticizes Building Modernization Law: "Draft is a Gift to Gas Lobby"

Berlin – The environmental organization Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) has strongly criticized the German federal government's draft law on building modernization, which is set for its first reading in the Bundestag. DUH asserts that the legislative proposal endangers the decarbonization of the building sector, fuels soaring gas prices for households, and is legally highly questionable.

According to DUH Federal Managing Director Barbara Metz, the government has ignored widespread criticism and pushed through a draft that clearly serves the interests of the gas lobby. Metz stated that members of parliament supporting the bill are not creating a solution but will bear long-term responsibility for a serious misstep in energy policy, leaving consumers exposed to exploding gas prices.

The organization has also declared its intention to exhaust all legal avenues to stop what it describes as a blatant climate policy setback. DUH urges members of the Bundestag to clearly reject the draft law in its current form.

The draft has also been described as poorly drafted by civil society, federal states in the Bundesrat, and the regulatory control council.
