Deutsche Umwelthilfe Sues McDonald's Over Alleged Greenwashing
Environmental group Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) has filed a lawsuit against McDonald's, alleging misleading advertising and unsubstantiated claims of climate neutrality by 2050. The NGO demands concrete and verifiable measures from the fast-food giant.
The German environmental organization Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) has filed a lawsuit against McDonald's Deutschland LLC at the Munich I Regional Court, accusing the fast-food chain of engaging in "brazen greenwashing" and misleading future promises.
According to DUH, McDonald's advertised on its website a commitment to be "climate neutral" globally from 2050, including its supply chain. However, the organization argues that the company has failed to provide sufficiently concrete and verifiable measures or interim targets to achieve this goal beyond 2030.
DUH claims that the measures presented by McDonald's, such as using green electricity, optimizing packaging, and employing bicycle couriers, are too vague and insufficient to fully support the climate commitment. While DUH has requested McDonald's to cease the misleading advertising, the company has not yet committed to refraining from repeating it.
Jürgen Resch, federal managing director of DUH, criticized McDonald's for seeking to benefit from a green image rather than engaging in truly sustainable business practices. He emphasized that 90 percent of the company's CO2 emissions originate in the upstream value chain and must be urgently reduced. Agnes Sauter, head of ecological consumer protection and market surveillance at DUH, added that companies must be transparent and clear in their future promises, providing verifiable interim targets and measures that are independently audited.
McDonald's has not yet publicly commented on the lawsuit. DUH is demanding that the company present a credible and transparent plan to achieve its climate goals.
