Deutsche Umwelthilfe to challenge building modernization law
Environmental group Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) is preparing a constitutional complaint against Germany's new building modernization law, arguing it undermines climate goals and props up fossil fuels.

The environmental organization Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) has announced it is preparing a constitutional complaint against the newly passed Building Modernization Act in Germany. DUH argues that the law fails to deliver effective climate protection and instead reinforces investment in fossil fuel infrastructure.
According to DUH, the legislation relies on costly "green gases" which, in their view, perpetuate the use of fossil fuels and contradict established climate targets. The organization predicts this will lead to higher heating costs for consumers and continued reliance on fossil energy sources.
"Shortly after a historic heatwave with thousands of deaths, the federal government is passing legislation that artificially keeps fossil heating systems alive and fuels the climate crisis," stated Barbara Metz, DUH's Federal Managing Director. She characterized the law as a concession to the gas and oil lobby.
DUH intends to file its complaint with the Federal Constitutional Court as soon as the law takes effect, aiming to legally enforce adherence to climate protection goals.
