Developer Launches Switch Emulator for Modified PS5 Consoles
A new project, ProsperoEden, enables Nintendo Switch games to run on modified Sony PlayStation 5 consoles. The emulator is in an early alpha stage with performance limitations.
Developer BlackBearReloaded has officially launched the ProsperoEden project, which ports a Nintendo Switch emulator, Eden, derived from Yuzu, to Sony's PlayStation 5 hardware. This allows users to run Switch games directly on their modified PS5 consoles as homebrew software.
The ProsperoEden project is based on a fork of the now-discontinued Yuzu emulator and has been adapted specifically for the PS5. Despite being in an early alpha phase, some games have shown playable performance. Initial compatibility tests indicate titles like "Cuphead" can reach 60 FPS, "Metroid Dread" around 40 FPS, and "Super Mario 3D World" is reportedly playable. "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" can launch but struggles to maintain a stable 60 FPS.
However, the project faces significant technical hurdles. The current PS5 version only supports OpenGL, lacking Vulkan backend support. Furthermore, some reported frame rates are based on menu or title screen performance, not full gameplay, meaning actual in-game performance may vary. Several games still suffer from severe issues, such as "Pokémon Legends: Z-A" running very slowly and crashing upon exit.
Despite these early-stage challenges, the rapid development is evident, with some 2D titles already playable. Future updates could potentially improve performance and compatibility, especially if Vulkan support is added.
It is important to note that the emulation scene, particularly for Nintendo consoles, is under close scrutiny by Nintendo. The legal action taken against the Yuzu team, which led to its discontinuation, suggests that ProsperoEden's long-term viability may also depend on Nintendo's legal response.
