Developer Modifies Apple AirPods into Disc Golf Trackers
A technology developer has repurposed Apple AirPods using their internal sensors to track disc spinning speed and other throwing data. The data is collected via a companion app.

Developer Sharhan has adapted Apple's AirPods wireless earbuds to function as trackers for disc sports, such as disc golf. The modification leverages the AirPods' built-in motion sensors and gyroscope data to collect performance metrics.
A dedicated application, Kinapod Disc, has been developed for this purpose and is currently available for early access through Apple's TestFlight platform. Users attach one earbud to a disc and wear the other. The system then captures data during throws.
The tracking capabilities include measuring the disc's spin rate, total rotation count, release speed, and hang time. The app compiles this information, providing session history, personal bests, and shareable summaries. It also allows for data export to platforms like Strava.
The earbuds' low weight, under 5 grams, reportedly does not significantly impact the throwing experience. While long-term durability after hundreds of throws is still being assessed, the developer has noted no malfunctions to date.
This project highlights a creative application of consumer technology for sports analytics, repurposing existing hardware for novel data collection.
