Developer Modifies Nokia 3310 to Run Custom Game

Developer Hoani Bryson has successfully modified a classic Nokia 3310 feature phone to run his custom game, "Trick Shot II," within the original device's chassis. This was achieved by replacing the phone's internal components with a bespoke circuit board featuring a Raspberry Pi Pico microcontroller.

The modification project originated from the Nokia 3310 Jam 8 game development event, which encouraged participants to create games in the style of the classic Nokia 3310. While submissions didn't strictly need to run on original hardware, Bryson aimed for true hardware integration.

Bryson's "Trick Shot II" won the event, but its complexity exceeded the original Nokia 3310's capabilities. Consequently, he designed and built a custom PCB that retains the phone's original screen and physical keypad while significantly boosting its processing power.

Bryson has made the project's technical details available on his personal website for those interested in replicating the modification. The game "Trick Shot II" is also playable directly via a web browser at hoaniware.itch.io/trickshot2.
