Developer ports Super Mario 64 to Pico VR headset
Developer Lucas Martinic has demonstrated a functional port of the 1996 title Super Mario 64 on a Pico VR headset, featuring spatial interaction capabilities.
Independent developer Lucas Martinic has showcased a project porting the classic Nintendo title 'Super Mario 64' to the Pico virtual reality platform. The demonstration illustrates the game running within a 3D interface that allows users to interact with the virtual environment from a mixed-reality perspective.
The implementation enables users to view the game world as a suspended window. A specific feature allows the player to reach into the virtual frame, grab the Mario character, and place the model into the physical space, creating an interaction between digital assets and the real-world environment.
Martinic developed the port over several months, utilizing an existing decompiled version of the original source code. The project builds upon earlier community-driven efforts to bring the title to modern VR hardware. While the demonstration has gained visibility among tech enthusiasts, Martinic has not yet announced a public release date or accessibility details for the software.
