Developer Maurice Heumann has successfully reconstructed the C++ source code for the 2009 video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, utilizing artificial intelligence. The project, spanning three months, consumed over 500 billion tokens.
Led by Heumann with assistance from community members, the team employed AI agents, including models like Claude Max and Codex Pro, to decompile the game's executable files. Initial results produced a bootable version of the game with a functional main menu and map loading capabilities, though the code required further refinement.
A key element of the project was the implementation of a "byte-for-byte matching" verification system. This method involved compiling the AI-generated code and comparing its binary output for each function against the original game's code. Functions that did not match exactly were sent back to the AI for correction.
Ultimately, 99% of the game's functions were incorporated into the reconstructed source code, with 83% achieving byte-for-byte accuracy. Heumann has stated that the reconstructed code will be kept for private use and will not be publicly released.
