Developer releases DiscImageStudio for etching patterns onto optical discs

A new open-source tool, DiscImageStudio, enables users to etch custom imagery onto the data surfaces of CD, DVD, and Blu-ray discs by manipulating laser reflection.

3 November 2026

Developer realNyarime has introduced an open-source utility called DiscImageStudio, designed to etch graphical patterns onto the recording surface of optical media. The software functions by controlling the laser's writing process to alter the reflectivity of specific areas on the disc, creating a visual effect similar to relief printing.

The tool is compatible with standard CD and DVD drives, as well as single-layer Blu-ray discs up to 25GB. Because optical drive precision and disc material composition vary, the software requires a calibration phase to ensure accurate alignment of the etched patterns. The developer claims that iterative calibration significantly enhances the positional precision of the etching process.

Practical application depends on the medium used. CD-R discs are permanent, whereas rewritable media like CD-RW present challenges such as image ghosting due to the software's current lack of a full-disc erasure feature. Blu-ray discs offer the highest potential for detail, while CD media provides the fastest production time, with DVDs serving as a middle ground in terms of cost and resolution.
