Developer Brandon Thomas has released new open-source applications: WordCraft, GridCraft, and DeckCraft, aiming to replace Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint respectively. All three applications were developed using the Rust programming language, with assistance from the Claude AI model.
The newly released tools are available for download and testing on GitHub. They are designed for native operation on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and also offer a browser-based version via WebAssembly, promoting broad accessibility.
WordCraft includes support for DOCX file handling, encompassing various formatting options, revisions, and mail merge. GridCraft features a formula engine with over 500 functions, dynamic arrays, and compatibility with formats like XLSX and CSV. DeckCraft is intended for presentations, supporting PPTX files and export to PDF or image formats.
These projects are currently in early development stages, with their code publicly available on GitHub. The initiative aims to provide free and capable alternatives to established office productivity software by leveraging modern programming languages and AI in the development process.
