Developer Runs Doom Game on Canon EOS 500D DSLR Camera
A developer has modified Canon's EOS 500D DSLR camera using Magic Lantern firmware to run the original Doom game directly from an SD card.

Developer lauris-nl has successfully run the classic game Doom on Canon's EOS 500D (also known as EOS 550D) DSLR camera. The modification was achieved using the open-source Magic Lantern firmware, a third-party enhancement for Canon cameras.
The project allows the game to be launched directly from the camera's SD memory card, effectively turning the camera into a handheld gaming device. The firmware enables the game's graphics to be displayed, and the camera's physical buttons have been mapped to control the game. For instance, the camera's directional buttons can be used for character movement, and the 'Set' button for shooting.
The project was initially released on GitHub. While directly adapted for the EOS 500D, the developer notes that theoretically, similar modifications could be possible on other Canon models equipped with DIGIC 4 to DIGIC 7 series processors. This would require Magic Lantern support for those models and potentially code adjustments to map the controls specific to each camera.
It is important to note that Magic Lantern is not officially endorsed by Canon, and installing it is done at the user's own risk. Any issues arising from firmware flashing are not covered by warranty. While the modification enables gameplay, the camera's shutter button does not provide the traditional mechanical feedback during play.
