Diablo 4 Expansion Packs Canceled Ahead of Diablo 5 Release

Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed that its action role-playing game Diablo 4 will not receive additional major expansion packs prior to the release of Diablo 5. The studio's development resources are now being prioritized for Diablo 4's seasonal updates and the development of the upcoming Diablo 5.

Brent Gibson, Diablo series game director, stated in an interview with PC Gamer that the "Hate" expansion's narrative has reached its conclusion. He indicated that the next significant story arc, titled "Terror's Tale," is being developed for Diablo 5. While new story content will be introduced in Diablo 4 through future seasons, these updates will not constitute large-scale expansions.

Diablo 5 is set to take place a century after the events of Diablo 4. Gibson mentioned that the team aims for narrative continuity but has not yet finalized a clear roadmap for how seasonal content will bridge the story gaps. The developers intend to observe player feedback on each season to shape future content delivery.

The next season for Diablo 4, "Legacy of the Damned," is scheduled to launch on September 15th, commemorating the series' 30th anniversary. This season will feature the return of Deckard Cain and pit players against the original Prime Evils. Additionally, a long-rumored Nintendo Switch port of Diablo 4, including all previously released content, will also become available on the same day.
