Diarrhea Outbreaks Linked to Produce Lead Americans to Avoid Fruits and Vegetables

Several ongoing foodborne illness outbreaks in the United States, associated with fresh fruits and vegetables, have led a substantial number of Americans to avoid these food items. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating six instances of diarrheal illness caused by the parasite Cyclospora, which is known to spread from human feces to fresh produce.

To date, over 11,500 confirmed and probable cases have been tallied across 41 states, with more than 300 individuals requiring hospitalization. Health officials acknowledge that the reported case totals are likely an undercount of the actual number of infections. Previous outbreaks have been linked to produce such as leafy greens, fresh basil, cilantro, snow peas, green onions, and raspberries.

The largest identified outbreak is connected to Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce, which was distributed to Taco Bell restaurants and numerous other outlets. This specific outbreak has sickened thousands across nine states, an increase from the five states identified in the previous week. Michigan alone reported 9,253 cases as of July 27.

The prevalence of these outbreaks has prompted widespread consumer caution. Many individuals are now hesitant to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, raising concerns about public health and food safety. Health authorities are continuing their investigations and emphasizing the importance of proper food handling and hygiene.
