Dick’s Sporting Goods closes multiple store locations in 2026

Retailer Dick’s Sporting Goods has closed several store locations across the United States throughout 2026. According to company filings, the chain finished the second quarter with 630 stores, down from 644 at the beginning of the year. The closures occurred in various regions, including Washington state, New York, and Pennsylvania.

These closures coincide with the company’s ongoing strategy to expand its House of Sport concept. These larger, experience-focused stores offer an interactive environment for customers, a departure from the traditional retail format. During the same period in which the company shuttered underperforming locations, the number of House of Sport facilities increased from 35 to 41, largely through conversions and strategic relocations.

In several instances, the closures involved locations situated in struggling shopping malls where lease agreements were not renewed. For example, the store in Massapequa, New York, closed following the expiration of its lease at a site slated for warehouse redevelopment, while the Beaver Valley Mall location in Pennsylvania shut down after nearly two decades of operation.

This consolidation of real estate highlights a shift in the company’s business model as it moves away from smaller, conventional retail footprints to favor larger experiential centers designed to drive foot traffic.
