Economist and sustainable development expert Diego Mesa Puyo assumed his role as CEO and Chairperson of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) today, beginning a four-year term at the helm of the world's largest public funder of environmental protection. His tenure coincides with the GEF's ninth replenishment period (GEF-9), which has secured initial donor pledges exceeding $4.3 billion.
Mesa Puyo's appointment comes as the world strives to meet 2030 environmental targets. "We have a global responsibility to protect nature and the environment while driving sustainable economic growth. To achieve the 2030 goals, we must link environmental action with economic development," Mesa Puyo stated. He highlighted the GEF's position in the global financial architecture to connect governments with investors and communities for lasting environmental benefits.
Previously, Mesa Puyo served as Colombia's Minister of Mines and Energy, where he spearheaded one of Latin America's most ambitious energy transition policies, mobilizing significant private investment. He also held leadership positions in climate policy at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
During Mesa Puyo's leadership, the GEF will focus on agreed priorities such as promoting integrated solutions, increasing blended finance, and strengthening whole-of-government and whole-of-society approaches. Support for Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States will also be enhanced under GEF-9.
