Digital Road Sign in Austin Praises Safe Drivers
Insurance company Lemonade has deployed a digital road sign in Austin, Texas, that compliments drivers adhering to speed limits. The initiative aims to encourage safer driving behavior through positive reinforcement.

Lemonade, an insurance company based in New York, has launched a campaign in Austin, Texas, featuring a digital road sign designed to promote safe driving. Dubbed "The Slow Sign," the initiative uses positive feedback to encourage drivers to comply with speed limits.
Developed in partnership with creative agency Cash Studio, the sign is equipped with radar to detect vehicle speeds and a message board. When drivers travel at or below the posted speed limit, the sign displays personalized compliments. Messages include phrases like "Obsessed With Your Safe Driving" and "Way To Drive a Fast Car Slow."
Ivan Cash, founder of Cash Studio, stated that the campaign targeted Texas due to its high rate of car crashes and prevalent speeding issues. Texas experiences more traffic accidents than any other U.S. state, with speeding being a significant contributing factor.
Research has indicated that negative messaging on road signs can sometimes lead to an increase in crashes, possibly by distracting drivers. In contrast, positive reinforcement strategies, such as Lemonade's "The Slow Sign," may prove more effective in modifying driver behavior. Finland has previously experimented with similar signage, displaying smiley faces for compliant drivers and frowning faces or exclamation points for those exceeding the limit.
The Lemonade campaign in Austin seeks to demonstrate the effectiveness of positive reinforcement in fostering safer driving habits and ultimately reducing traffic incidents.
