Dirty Workplaces Deter Employees From Returning to Office

A recent survey, the "Fall 2026 Back-to-the-Office Index" by cleaning and maintenance monitoring tech company Invisible Sun, reveals that dirty workplaces are significantly impacting employees' willingness to return to physical office spaces. Nearly 60 percent of the 646 employees surveyed stated that a "grungy" work environment negatively affects their desire to come into the office.

More than a third of respondents (approximately 34%) found the state of their workplaces to be a problem that hinders their work. Common areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, and individual workstations were frequently cited as particularly off-putting due to a lack of cleanliness. This suggests a broader employee concern for health and safety within their work environment.

The issue of cleanliness extends beyond employee comfort and motivation, posing direct risks to businesses. Over 40 percent of employees surveyed indicated they would consider leaving their employer for one with cleaner facilities. Furthermore, nearly half (48.3%) reported that dealing with a grubby workplace negatively impacts their perception of the business owner.

The Invisible Sun report highlights that workplace hygiene is no longer just an aesthetic concern but a critical factor in employee retention and company perception. The findings suggest that maintaining clean and well-kept office spaces is crucial for companies aiming to attract and retain staff amidst evolving return-to-office strategies.
