Disc Makers Honors Longtime Owner Morris Ballen

Disc Makers is honoring the life and legacy of Morris Ballen, its longtime owner and CEO, who passed away on September 21 at the age of 88. Ballen was widely recognized for his commitment to fostering independent music.

A September 27 obituary in The New York Times acknowledged Ballen's contributions, specifically highlighting his role in helping generations of independent artists distribute their music globally. The company is using this occasion to reflect on his impact.

Ballen took over Disc Makers, founded by his father Ivin Ballen, and transformed it from a regional record-pressing operation into a national leader. He identified a growing need among artists to bypass traditional record labels, providing them with professional manufacturing and packaging at accessible price points.

Under Ballen's leadership, Disc Makers adapted to industry changes, producing vinyl, cassettes, and CDs. "Morris understood that independent artists deserved the same quality and respect as artists signed to major labels," said current CEO Tony van Veen. "That belief helped change the music business, and it remains central to who we are today."

Disc Makers is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. Ballen's influence is noted to persist through the company's entrepreneurial spirit, dedication to independent creators, and the many employees he mentored.
