Discord Reintroduces Age Verification With New Methods
Discord is relaunching its age verification system, abandoning previous plans for mandatory selfies and ID checks. New verification options include credit cards and app store accounts.
Discord, the popular voice chat platform, has announced the reintroduction of its age verification mechanism. The platform is moving away from its earlier proposal that required mandatory identity documents and selfies, a plan that had faced significant backlash from users concerned about privacy.
The company is now aiming to balance safety with user privacy by implementing a revised system. Discord will estimate user age based on factors like account creation date and server activity, categorizing users into three groups: "Adults" (18+), "Teens" (13-17), and "Unconfirmed." Teen accounts will receive enhanced protections and restricted access to adult-oriented content.
Discord is expanding its verification options beyond identification documents and selfies. Users can now verify their age using credit card information, Apple App Store or Google Play accounts, and Google Wallet. Newly created accounts will initially be classified as "Unconfirmed" until enough data is gathered for age estimation.
These changes are designed to provide tailored safety measures and content access based on a user's age group. For teen users, profile information and activity status will be visible only to friends by default. All users will have the ability to limit messages and friend requests from unknown accounts. The new system will be rolled out gradually.
