This is a marked reduction from pre-2010 models, which could use between 23–38 liters (6–10 gallons) per wash.
More compact, countertop models generally use between 7–11 liters (2–3 gallons) per load. Even with five cycles per week, the monthly water usage amounts to approximately 227 liters (60 gallons), still less than typical handwashing methods.*
Several factors influence a dishwasher's water consumption, including its age, model, and the selected wash cycle. Models with auto or sensor cycles adjust water and time based on soil levels, while heavy-duty cycles may use more water. Quick cycles, while faster, can sometimes be less water-efficient.
The way dishes are loaded and ensuring a full load also impact efficiency. Running half-loads wastes resources, while overloading can hinder cleaning performance. External factors like water pressure and temperature can also play a role in a machine's operation.
Beyond machine design, user habits are crucial for water conservation. Users can save water by skipping pre-rinsing, utilizing eco or smart wash settings, running only full loads, and performing regular maintenance like cleaning filters and spray arms. Opting for air-drying over heat-drying when available also contributes to energy savings.
