Distinguishing between winter blues and seasonal affective disorder

Psychiatrist Prof. Andreas Menke states that the distinction between the common "winter blues" and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) lies in the degree of functional impairment. While winter blues may involve temporary fatigue or low mood, clinical depression consistently interferes with daily tasks, social relationships, and overall professional performance.

Warning signs of SAD identified by experts include a persistent low mood lasting more than two weeks, an inability to derive pleasure from activities, and withdrawal from social obligations. Unlike general depression, which often manifests as insomnia, winter-pattern depression frequently features atypical symptoms such as excessive sleepiness and cravings for carbohydrate-rich foods.

Biological factors, including a 40 percent genetic predisposition and the impact of reduced daylight on the body's internal clock and immune system, are primary drivers. Experts advise that if these symptoms significantly hinder one's ability to maintain a normal lifestyle, professional medical consultation is necessary.
