Distributed Media Lab Adopts AWS Serverless Architecture

Media technology startup Distributed Media Lab has implemented a serverless architecture utilizing Amazon Web Services (AWS). The company's Chief Technology Officer, Sam Parnell, stated that the decision to move to AWS from Google Cloud was driven by performance and security concerns.

Parnell explained that Distributed Media Lab operates entirely on AWS Lambda, having not used any EC2 instances in its first year. This approach enables an event-driven microservices architecture, allowing for efficient scaling and improved productivity for the engineering team.

The adoption of a serverless model supports Distributed Media Lab's objectives in managing and distributing digital content effectively online. The company aims to address common industry challenges such as content piracy and controlled sharing with partners.

Parnell cited AWS's more mature offering as a key factor in choosing the platform, especially considering the company's growth trajectory. Parnell has prior experience with AWS from his time at Bleacher Report, where he also managed the company's infrastructure on the AWS cloud.
