Diversified Technologies Introduces Hybrid MVDC Circuit Breaker for Ships and Data Centers

Diversified Technologies, Inc. (DTI) has introduced a hybrid MVDC 5 to 20 kV circuit breaker designed to enhance safety and reliability in electrical systems. The new device merges the functionality of traditional mechanical contacts with advanced solid-state switches, enabling the safe use of direct current (DC) in applications such as ships and data centers.

Conventional mechanical circuit breakers can generate hazardous arcs when contacts separate, potentially damaging equipment and shortening its lifespan. DTI's hybrid solution addresses this by employing a three-step process. Initially, low-loss mechanical contacts conduct high current. During a fault, current is momentarily transferred to solid-state switches, allowing the mechanical contacts to separate without arcing. Subsequently, the solid-state components manage the interruption and energy dissipation.

Claimed to withstand over one million operational cycles, the DTI Hybrid MVDC Circuit Breaker facilitates rapid fault isolation and system recovery. As the solid-state components only conduct during fault conditions, they reduce fault currents and their associated mechanical stresses, thereby extending contact life and improving overall system performance.

DTI positions the hybrid MVDC circuit breaker as a significant advancement for live DC systems, offering improved safety and reduced maintenance costs compared to traditional methods. Pricing for the unit starts at $10,000, varying with voltage and current ratings.
