TOKYO, Japan – NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced June 19 that it has deployed Nokia's MantaRay AutoPilot system, an AI-driven solution for the automatic optimization of mobile network quality. The company is the first operator in Japan to implement this technology.

MantaRay AutoPilot builds upon the MantaRay SON system, which DOCOMO introduced in November 2025. While the SON system automated network optimization through continuous monitoring and automatic adjustments, the design of parameters and policies still required manual intervention. AutoPilot eliminates this need by designing and executing network parameters and optimizations in real-time using artificial intelligence.

Operators simply specify desired quality targets, and the AI analyzes base station performance to determine optimal settings. The system can complete a full optimization cycle in as little as 15 minutes and can continuously adapt the network based on daily and local traffic patterns.

DOCOMO implemented MantaRay AutoPilot using a cloud-based architecture. This approach enabled rapid deployment without the constraints of hardware procurement lead times. The company aims to achieve TM Forum's "Autonomous Networks Level 4" through this system, where AI can predict network conditions and manage the network autonomously without human intervention.
