DOJ Charges Individuals in AI-Powered Student Loan Fraud Scheme

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has charged five individuals involved in a large-scale fraud operation that used artificial intelligence to fabricate student identities. The scheme involved harvesting stolen personal data to pose as legitimate college students, allowing the perpetrators to illicitly access federal student loan funds.

Federal authorities seized over $750,000 in cryptocurrency linked to a network with ties to Kenya. Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald stated that this represents the first international seizure of its kind in the region, attributing the success of the operation to new fraud-detection protocols implemented by the government.

The case highlights the evolving threat of AI-driven identity theft targeting government subsidy programs. The DOJ has signaled that this investigation is ongoing and that it intends to aggressively pursue similar networks both domestically and internationally.
