DOJ Investigates Rising Beef Prices at Eight Major Retail Chains

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is expanding its investigation into rising beef prices to include eight major grocery chains and big-box retailers. The probe aims to understand the factors contributing to significant price increases observed in the U.S. beef market.

Federal officials have requested detailed information from the companies concerning their wholesale purchases, pricing, costs, and profit margins. These requests build upon the DOJ's initial investigation launched in May, which focused on the meatpacking industry and three companies controlling a substantial portion of the market: Cargill, Tyson Foods, JBS, and National Beef.

Associate Attorney General Stanley E. Woodward Jr. sent letters in July to companies including Kroger, Publix, Walmart, Albertsons, Aldi, Ahold Delhaize USA, Costco, and Amazon. "Beef prices are a critical concern to Americans, and a priority for this Justice Department," Woodward stated in the correspondence.

Woodward emphasized that the investigation is not pre-judging any wrongdoing but seeks to understand the reasons behind the price hikes. He noted that while supply and demand play a role, companies should be able to demonstrate if price increases are solely due to reduced supply. The move comes amid a broader trend of rising food costs and overall cost of living in the United States.
