Chinese automaker Dongfeng Motor Corporation plans to introduce 100 solid state battery vehicles for demonstration purposes by the end of 2024. The company targets the delivery of 50,000 vehicles by 2027, utilizing its in-house developed solid state batteries.

The company announced its roadmap during the 21st Shanghai International Automobile Manufacturing Technology and Equipment and Materials Exhibition. Prior to these targets, Dongfeng aims for small-scale mass production of solid state battery-equipped vehicles around 2030, followed by large-scale production and widespread application around 2035.

Zhang Wei, operations manager for new batteries at Dongfeng's Research and Development Institute, stated that the company completed winter testing of 350 Wh/kg solid state batteries in January and plans their application in the fourth quarter. By 2027, the company also aims to launch fast-charging solid state battery vehicles and initiate pilot production for 350 Wh/kg battery technology.

If successful, Dongfeng's plans indicate a significant push towards solid state battery technology, which promises enhanced safety and energy density over current lithium-ion batteries. The company emphasizes its commitment to independent research and development, reporting 100% in-house development of key technologies.
