Dongfeng's self-developed steer-by-wire system nears production
Dongfeng Motor Corporation's first self-developed steer-by-wire (SBW) system has received official approval in China and is approaching mass production, the company announced.

Dongfeng Motor Corporation, a major Chinese automaker, is set to begin mass production of its first self-developed steer-by-wire (SBW) system. The relevant vehicle model recently passed official review by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), clearing the path for large-scale manufacturing.
The SBW technology replaces the direct mechanical linkage between the steering wheel and the wheels with electronic signals. This allows the steering feel and system functions to be updated remotely over-the-air (OTA), akin to smartphone software updates.
Dongfeng highlights several advantages of the system, including a response time under 40 milliseconds, an adaptive steering ratio that adjusts to vehicle speed, and customizable steering feedback. The elimination of the traditional steering shaft also enhances safety by reducing the risk of steering column intrusion into the cabin during a collision.
This technological milestone represents Dongfeng's successful transition from advanced research to full-scale production in intelligent chassis technology. The company states that this also establishes a fully domestic and independently controlled pathway for the development of advanced steer-by-wire systems by Chinese manufacturers.
