Doom developer id Software reportedly cuts staff by half

Doom developer id Software has reportedly laid off around half of its workforce as part of significant layoffs affecting Xbox, according to Game Developer. One source cited by the publication suggested the cuts amounted to over 90 redundancies.

The report emerged on the same day id Software released a major expansion for its latest Doom title. The company's quality assurance (QA) department is said to have been heavily affected by the staff reductions.

Michael Maynard, a former id Software employee impacted by the cuts, corroborated the figure in a LinkedIn post, stating that the layoffs affected "roughly" 50 percent of the company. He also commented on the quality of the first-person engine technology developed by the studio.

Microsoft, the parent company of Xbox, has conducted multiple rounds of layoffs across its gaming divisions in recent months, impacting thousands of employees. The company has cited a need to streamline operations and focus on key growth areas.
