DoorDash reports minimal adoption of AI agents for food orders

During the company's third-quarter earnings call, DoorDash CEO Tony Xu addressed the current utility of autonomous AI agents in food delivery. While large language models are increasingly integrated into digital retail, their application in automated food ordering remains negligible.

According to Xu, AI agents have generated only a few hundred orders since their deployment. This figure is statistically insignificant when measured against the nearly one billion orders DoorDash processed during the same three-month period. The low adoption rate underscores a gap between the theoretical capabilities of AI agents and current consumer behavior.

Xu suggested that the value of AI agents may be more pronounced in complex, high-consideration purchases rather than repetitive, low-stakes tasks like food delivery. He noted that for simple transactions, consumers still prefer interacting directly with the DoorDash platform rather than delegating the task to third-party software.
