Douyin overtakes WeChat in average daily user time
Douyin surpassed WeChat in average daily time spent per user in China during July, according to a Nomura report. This marks the first time the video app has become China's leading app by this measure.

The short-video application Douyin overtook communication platform WeChat in average daily time spent per user in China during July, according to a Nomura analysis. This is the first instance where Douyin has become the leading app in the country by this metric.
Users of Douyin spent an average of 112 to 120 minutes per day on the app. In comparison, WeChat users averaged approximately 82 to 85 minutes of daily usage. This growth points to Douyin's increasing popularity among users.
WeChat, however, maintained its lead in terms of the number of daily active users, with 931 million compared to Douyin's 714 million. Douyin's daily user base saw significant growth, increasing by 19% year-over-year, while WeChat's growth was a more modest 3%.
ByteDance applications, including Douyin, collectively accounted for 40.9% of mobile internet usage time in China. This figure surpasses Tencent's app share, which stood at 29.1%. The shift reflects evolving digital service consumption patterns among Chinese users.
