Dream Sports CTO Amit Sharma Departs to Launch AI Venture

Dream Sports Chief Technology Officer Amit Sharma has stepped down after a decade at the company to pursue his own venture focused on artificial intelligence. Sharma has been working on his new startup, currently in stealth mode, since last month.

Sharma joined Dream Sports in 2016, where he was instrumental in building the technology team from the ground up. Prior to that, he held engineering roles at Netflix and Yahoo in the United States. His earlier venture, Dream Play, which offered personalized sports gameplay analysis, was recently shut down.

The departure occurs as Dream Sports navigates a new phase after last year's ban on real-money gaming, which impacted its popular Dream11 fantasy sports platform. The company has since shifted its focus towards fintech, content, and sports infrastructure businesses.

Dream Sports faces significant financial headwinds, including potential tax liabilities exceeding ₹20,000 crore (approximately $2.4 billion USD). The Supreme Court has upheld a 28% retrospective Goods and Services Tax (GST) on online real-money gaming.
