Dresden exhibition showcases the evolution of stonemasonry

An exhibition that has opened in Dresden offers an in-depth look at the evolution of the stonemasonry profession and its significance in building culture. Hosted at the Kulturpalast, the display showcases traditional restoration techniques alongside modern stone carving. It includes exemplary works by graduates from vocational schools and information on the role of stonemasons in Saxony.

Juliane Naumann, director of the Center for Building Culture in Saxony, emphasizes the sector's need for new talent. Stonemason Stefan Geith speaks passionately about his trade. He provides examples of how sophisticated ornaments, such as trefoils or fish-scale patterns, can be created from sandstone. These decorative elements not only adorn historic buildings in Dresden, like the Frauenkirche, but also represent the continuity of craftsmanship. Sandstone remains a vital building material for the future.
