Driverless Trains: Research on Lütjenburg Railway Line

A research team presented its progress on developing driverless trains in Lütjenburg on Thursday. The goal is to enable trains to operate autonomously, without a human driver. Practical tests are currently underway on the 17-kilometer railway line connecting Lütjenburg and Malente.

The tests involve small, driverless rail vehicles equipped with AI cameras to detect obstacles. One of the vehicles being tested is a lightweight design powered by solar energy. Students have also developed new lighting and interior concepts to enhance passenger comfort.

The "REAKT" research project's primary objective is to revitalize abandoned railway routes and improve mobility in rural areas for individuals without private vehicles. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research is supporting the initiative with five million euros until the end of 2028. The aim is to create a model applicable to hundreds of similar railway lines across Germany.

Renovation work is being carried out on the tracks, after which heritage trains are planned to operate on the line. This technological advancement could offer new solutions to rural transportation challenges and promote sustainable travel.
