Driver's licenses have appeared for sale on the dark web within hours of being scanned by a car rental company. A report by KrebsOnSecurity published Tuesday revealed that a new ID theft service called Nexus offers over 153 million driver's licenses for sale.
According to the report, high-resolution scans of customer licenses, showing both the front and back, are available through the service. The files also include images captured in the infrared and ultraviolet spectrums, potentially enabling counterfeit IDs to pass hologram tests.
Several prominent individuals, including security researchers and an FBI assistant director, have also been affected by the data exposure. Beyond driver's licenses, the Nexus service reportedly offers other forms of identification for sale.
The incident highlights growing concerns over ID theft and identity fraud. The scale and speed of the data leak raise questions about data security practices within the car rental industry.
