Drones deliver food and remove bodies after Nepal's flood disaster

Chinese-made drones are being utilized to transport flood victims' bodies and deliver food to survivors in the aftermath of devastating flash floods that struck the border region between Nepal and China's Tibet.

The Nepalese army has deployed four DJI FlyCart 100 drones, donated by China, to conduct aid deliveries. According to Reuters, these drones are making between 10 and 16 deliveries daily. The deployment followed a partial glacier collapse in the Himalayas on August 26, which triggered a surge of water, mud, and debris that impacted border crossings, valley communities, and hydropower projects.

The DJI FlyCart 100 drones are equipped with a 30-meter rope and winch system, enabling them to lift and drop heavy loads. DJI, the Chinese drone manufacturer, states on its website that the drones can carry between 187 and 220 pounds (approximately 85-100 kg), depending on the battery configuration. Their ability to operate in challenging terrain makes them crucial for reaching isolated areas.

The use of drones in such disaster scenarios offers a significant advantage in rescue and relief operations. They provide a rapid response mechanism and access to areas cut off by natural disasters. Given the scale of the flooding, drone operations are expected to continue supporting aid efforts for an extended period.
