Duke-NUS: COVID-19 Isolation Policies May Continue Despite Easing

Even as the Singaporean government has eased its COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, local hospitals may continue to isolate patients who test positive for the virus. Chan Kuan Rong, an expert from Duke-NUS Medical School (National University of Singapore), discussed the ongoing need for certain isolation protocols.

The recent relaxation of measures allows the general public to return to more normal activities. However, healthcare facilities operate under different considerations. Hospitals are environments where vulnerable individuals congregate, and protecting patients and staff from infection remains a priority. Consequently, specific isolation practices may be maintained to mitigate transmission risks within these settings.

According to Chan Kuan Rong, decisions regarding isolation policies are nuanced and depend on various factors. These include the clinical condition of the patient, the transmissibility of the specific variant, and the hospital's capacity for infection control. The aim is to strike a balance between facilitating patient care and ensuring a safe healthcare environment.

This suggests that while broad societal restrictions are lifting, targeted measures within healthcare institutions may continue. This highlights the ongoing need for vigilance in managing infectious diseases, particularly in settings where they can spread rapidly among susceptible populations.
