Duke-NUS Medical School Updates Curriculum for Clinical Readiness

Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore has initiated a significant curriculum revision to better prepare its medical students for clinical practice within the nation. The core objective is to cultivate "clinicians first" who also embody the school's ambition to develop "clinicians plus" – individuals with advanced insights and capabilities in science, scholarship, innovation, leadership, and education.

The impetus for these changes stems from a need to align the educational program more closely with the school's updated Education Mission, the forthcoming National Outcomes Framework for Medical Graduates, and critically, the evolving clinical needs of Singapore. Dr. Shiva Sarraf-Yazdi, Associate Dean of the Duke-NUS Office of Education, highlighted that the revision seeks to ensure students gain practical, real-world capabilities.

Historically, calls for reform in medical education have recurred across different eras, yet many fundamental themes, such as the need for "generalism" and a focus on preventive healthcare, have remained consistent. Duke-NUS acknowledges this historical pattern and aims to learn from it rather than merely repeating past approaches.

The updated curriculum is designed to encourage students to become active participants in patient care within a safe learning environment. It also emphasizes fostering a culture of continuous inquiry and improvement in healthcare delivery.
