Duke-NUS Students Support Children With Cancer and Their Families

Duke-NUS Medical School hosted its 12th Paediatric Brain and Solid Tumour Awareness (PBSTA) Day on May 17, 2026, in Singapore. The event gathered about 22 pediatric cancer patients, their families, and caregivers for a day focused on respite, connection, and encouragement.

The PBSTA Day saw participation from approximately 50 Duke-NUS medical students alongside clinicians from KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH) and the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI). This initiative addresses the broader challenges faced by families dealing with cancer, noting that pediatric brain tumors are among the most common solid tumors in children globally, carrying significant disease burden and mortality risk.

The day's program featured activities such as musical performances, carnival games, and a luxury sports car joyride, a recurring feature organized with Porsche Club Singapore. Public outreach included awareness booths and a panel discussion featuring cancer survivors, caregivers, and clinicians.

Duke-NUS aims to train physicians who blend scientific expertise with compassionate advocacy. PBSTA Day reflects this mission, allowing students to engage with the community, foster moments of joy, and build meaningful human connections for patients and their families navigating difficult times. The event has grown from a student-led initiative into a community-supported platform.
