Dynasty Warriors Producer Prefers New Titles Over Remakes

Tomohiko Sho, producer for the Dynasty Warriors series, stated he wishes to focus on creating new games rather than personally overseeing remakes of older titles.

Tomohiko Sho, the long-serving producer for the Dynasty Warriors series, has indicated that he no longer wishes to personally lead the development of remakes for older games, even if they prove successful. Sho, who joined Koei (now Koei Tecmo) in the 1990s and has been involved in the development of nearly every main installment, aims to dedicate his limited development time to creating new titles before his retirement.

The latest release, "Dynasty Warriors 2 with Musou Orochi," is a remake utilizing Unreal Engine 5, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the original PlayStation 2 version. Sho acknowledged in an interview that a successful remake could increase the likelihood of other older titles in the series, such as "Dynasty Warriors 3" and subsequent games not yet on Steam, also receiving remakes.

"Honestly, I don't want to do them myself," Sho stated. "It's almost like starting from scratch. Sometimes I think to myself, why am I remaking something I've already done before?" However, he recognized the desire to cater to the series' dedicated fanbase and is considering handing over such projects to others.

Now in his fifties, Sho expressed a preference for working on new game series or sequels. He emphasized the significant time and effort required for remake projects, as demonstrated by the "Dynasty Warriors 2" remake, and noted the difficulty in achieving a successful outcome. Sho remained uncertain about the final reception of the latest release, despite the development team's satisfaction with the product.
