E-commerce Delivery Faces Strain During India's Festive Season

The 2026 festive shopping season in India is poised to challenge e-commerce delivery networks, with increased consumer demand and expanding logistics options creating a complex operational landscape.

Recent expansions by India Post as a logistics provider and Flipkart's Ekart opening its network to external businesses introduce more capacity. However, these additions enter a crowded market with established players like Blue Dart and FedEx, and aggregators such as Shiprocket, intensifying competition for timely deliveries.

This surge in capacity is met with increased demand for temporary workers, with hiring expected to rise 15%-20%. Despite this, Adecco India estimates a 10%-15% gap in frontline roles, suggesting a potential shortfall.

D2C brands face the dual challenge of driving sales through discounts while meeting delivery expectations shaped by rapid commerce platforms. Successfully aligning inventory, warehouse throughput, pickup capacity, and rider availability with precise demand at the right time and location will be critical, with misalignments proving costly.
