E-commerce Firm Digital River Ceases Operations

Digital River, a company that played a significant role in the e-commerce sector for over 30 years, has ceased operations. Founded in 1994, the firm initially focused on software distribution before expanding into a comprehensive "merchant of record" (MoR) service, handling payment processing, tax compliance, and global sales for businesses.

Through a series of acquisitions, Digital River established itself as a major player, processing over $3 billion in transactions annually at its peak. The company partnered with numerous well-known brands and payment providers, including Adobe, Apple Pay, Visa, and PayPal, facilitating international sales.

In recent years, however, Digital River faced mounting financial challenges. Merchants reported widespread issues with delayed payments and sudden, unfavorable changes to contract terms through its MyCommerce platform. Many businesses claimed substantial amounts in overdue payments, some dating back several months.

The situation escalated as merchants reported that Digital River's legal counsel disputed alleged debts, and the company became unresponsive to payout requests. Barry Kasoff was appointed CEO to oversee the winding down of the business, leaving numerous merchants with unrecovered earnings.
