The global accumulation of electronic waste (e-waste) is escalating, with only a fraction handled responsibly. This waste stream contains hazardous materials like lead and mercury, posing serious environmental and health threats. By 2024, it was estimated that over 347 million metric tons of unrecycled e-waste existed globally.

E-waste is growing at an annual rate of 3–5%, and merely 17.4% of it is officially recycled. However, this discarded technology holds valuable resources, including gold, silver, and copper, with a potential salvage value nearing $57 billion.

Manufacturing new electronics is resource-intensive. Producing a single computer requires approximately 239 kg of fossil fuel, 22 kg of chemicals, and 1.5 tons of water. This highlights the impact of our consumption habits and the importance of adopting more sustainable options like refurbished devices.

In the United States, the average household possesses 21 electronic devices, contributing to the growing waste problem. Many of these devices eventually end up in landfills, where their decomposition can release harmful chemicals. Raising consumer awareness and improving recycling infrastructure are critical steps to address the e-waste challenge.
