Early App Demonstrates Potential of Apple's iPhone Duo

Apple's first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, has not yet gone on sale, but an application designed for the device has already garnered significant attention.

The app, named Duo-Man, recreates the experience of playing music on a classic 1980s Walkman, utilizing the Duo's foldable screen to simulate the hinged cassette deck. Independent developer Vidit Bhargava demonstrated the app's features in a post on X.

The Duo-Man app displays the outer screen to resemble the front of a Walkman, complete with a window for the simulated tape. When the phone is unfolded, the screens split to present a modern music selection interface on one side and a loaded cassette tape on the other. Bhargava has included authentic details such as the sound of button presses and the static hiss characteristic of real Walkman players.

Bhargava developed the app during a hackathon, explaining that he primarily built it for enjoyment due to the similarity between a Walkman's hinge and the iPhone Duo's magnetic hinge. Following the positive reception, he now plans to fully develop the app for release on Apple's App Store, potentially adding features like using an Apple Pencil for tape rewinding.

The app's success highlights how new devices from major tech companies can create new avenues for third-party developers. Apple executives, including software lead Craig Federighi, have acknowledged the importance of innovative apps on new hardware and Apple's role in guiding developers to explore device functionalities and poses.
