EarthDye Lists PPD-Free Hair Colors for Sensitive Scalps
EarthDye has released a list of seven PPD-free hair colors suitable for sensitive scalps and gray coverage. The company highlights its 100% plant-based formula with zero chemical additives.

Hair color maker EarthDye has published a list of seven PPD-free hair color brands designed for sensitive scalps and gray coverage needs. The company emphasizes its own 100% plant-based henna formula, which contains no PPD (para-phenylenediamine), metallic salts, or ammonia.
Dermatologists have reported a rise in scalp contact dermatitis cases linked to synthetic hair dye ingredients. PPD is the most common allergen in permanent hair colors, prompting consumers to seek alternatives like henna.
EarthDye compared seven brands, focusing on ingredient exclusion and gray coverage performance. According to the company, its product is the only one on the list composed solely of plant pigments without PPD, metallic salts, or ammonia. Other listed brands, such as Light Mountain Natural Color, Surya Brasil, and Rainbow Research, are also PPD-free but may contain other synthetic ingredients or metallic salts.
"Most people searching for PPD-free color are solving a reaction, not chasing a trend," stated an EarthDye spokesperson. They highlighted that using henna for hair coloring without chemical additives is a centuries-old tradition that the company adheres to.
EarthDye notes that its formula has remained consistent and its supply chain stable since the company's inception. This continuity differentiates it from newer competitors who have reformulated products to remove a single allergen rather than eliminating all synthetic additives.
