EasyHeat Cables Protect Pipes from Freezing and Ice Dams
North American plumbing contractors are installing EasyHeat heating cables to prevent residential water pipe freezing and ice dams in cold climate regions.
EasyHeat heating cables, manufactured by Shengzhou Jinwei Electric Heating Appliance Co., Ltd., are increasingly being used by plumbing contractors across North America. These cables serve a dual purpose: protecting residential water pipes from freezing and preventing ice dams from forming on roofs.
The self-regulating cables automatically adjust their heat output based on ambient temperatures. They deliver between 3 and 6 watts per foot in milder cold conditions and up to 12 watts per foot in sub-zero temperatures, eliminating the need for external thermostats in most applications. This technology addresses the widespread problem of frozen pipes, which annually costs the insurance industry billions of dollars in damages.
For effective pipe freeze protection, the heating cable must be installed along the entire length of exposed pipes, including valves and fittings. In unheated spaces, such as crawl spaces or exterior wall cavities, the cable is typically wrapped in a spiral pattern with a pitch of 6 to 8 inches. For roof de-icing, the cable is installed in a zigzag pattern along the roof edge, extending into the gutters and downspouts to create heated channels for meltwater.
Installation must comply with the National Electrical Code (NEC) Article 427 and local building codes. This includes requirements for GFCI protection and proper grounding of the cable's metallic braid. Adherence to these standards is crucial for obtaining permits and ensuring insurance coverage.
The self-regulating feature distinguishes these cables from constant-wattage types, which produce consistent heat regardless of conditions. This self-regulation prevents overheating, making the cables safe for use with plastic pipes and allowing for overlapped installation without creating hot spots.
